Aftershock's Classic Is Revived

One of my favourite "album" releases to emerge from Grime in the last 5 years got the ever increasingly trendy "Twitter Release" from Terror Danjah this week following on from Wiley, Dot Rotten and Spooky's extravagant giveaways (perhaps extravagance is an understatement in the case of Wiley).

The album first hit shelves in 2007 and is dominated by the immortal sounds of Terror Danjah and his small producing family (DOK, Big ED & Planet X) with contributions from the old Aftershock collective, most of whom still work together but under no moniker.

There is a toss-up of ideas and sounds, especially from the female contributors. Whereas before we had Lady Fury, Stush and Shystie who would actually spit on typical, hardcore Grime beats, on this CD we can hear what Grime sounds like for 3 minutes with the accompaniment of former Garage/R & B vocalists such as  Shola Ama and her sister Sadie, Gemma Fox also gliding across the soft yet Grimey productions.

To oppose that idea of course, there had to be some hype and that is duly provided by (constantly underrated) Birmingham MC Devlilman alongside the talents of Bruza, Loudmouth, Tinie Tempah (who has a number one and two this year), and even Wiley in one of my favourite tracks from the release (Catch Up). Other highlights include Loudmouth going in on 2000 and Shock, 2 Nice on Feeling's Grow and my first instroduction to Badness on Ten Out Of Ten.

There is also an insane mash-up of the timeless Zumpi Hunter featuring Triple Threat, Royal, Krucial, Mz Bratt and more. Talking of insanse, take a listen to the set below featuring Terror on the legendary Rinse FM decks with Triple Threat, D Double E & Flyte !!

Mumdance - Different Circles

Haven't got shit loads of time on my hands right now, so can't really give an in-depth insight into how sick this is, will probably do so for K Mag in the week sometime. Just know it's a 17-track mix up of Mumdance productions, featuring MCs Jammer, Trim, Sparks, Kie, Badness and more, coming off the back of that sick production for Boy Better Know on 10 Man Roll (featured on Jammer's album Jahmanji reviewed by me for MTV Wrap-Up here).

J Beatz - 1st Of The Month

J Beatz is a producer from North London who's name you should probably have heard of by now. Since winning that JME competition years ago, the young beat-prodigy has made tunes for the likes of Big H, Devlin, Revolver, Syer Barz, Blacks, M.I.K and many more.

This completely free download showcases J Beatz' ability not only to produce but remix a beat in an array of different genres including Funky, Bassline and of course - Grime. Things to look out for include the incredibly PEAK drop on his remix of Dot Rotten - Rowdy Riddim, the dark, and intensive snaring bass on his rendition of Skream - Tortured Souls and remixes of tracks such as Wiley - Bang & Gracious K - Migraine Skank.

House Of Grime Mixes 002: DJ Fewie

Here it is, the second guest mix installment ! I've been more than happy with the response from the 1st one, with plenty more downloads than initially expected. So since then I've been organising lots with many DJ's - some up and coming, and some well established. I've listened to DJ Fewie's show on Urban FMTV a few times and with an impressed feeling I hooked up a mix. Download it after the Q&A.

DJ Fewie..introduce yourself to us, how long have you been DJ'ing for and how did you get started ?

I'm a 22 year old up and coming DJ from Luton. I've been mixing for about a year and a half now. I got into it because it's something I've always wanted to do and I was always listening to DJ mixes rather than the vocal side of grime so when my bros got some technics he gave me his Numarks so I could start mixing myself and make my own mixes.

You've got a Saturday night slot on Urban FMTV how did that come about ?

I emailed Raw on myspace asking if I could get a show on there. He listened to my mixes off myspace, liked what he heard and offered me a slot.

Tell us about the tracks you chose for this mix, why do you like them and why did you use these in particular ?

I chose these beats to put in the mix as most of them are bubbly and skippy beats which I prefer mixing with and get me more on a hype when mixing. Big up all the producers making them type of beats. I put the Rukus & Acid tune in there also as they're mcs from Luton I rate and want to promote them. Im hopefully gonna get more mcs from Luton back on spitting so listen out for them sets.

How far can you see yourself progressing as a DJ ?

I would like to see myself going to the top and be a well known DJ in grime. I've still got to get my mixing perfected but one day I hope to be up there with the best !

What equipment did you use for this mix ?

I use Pioneer CDJ 400's, Behringer djx700 mixer and record with audacity.

Finally what can we expect from you in the near future ?

Getting my name out more. Doing more sets with mc's. Im also on Roundhouse Radio with Score5 & Meshak Nasty so lock in every saturday to hear some mad mixing from all djs. Merky ACE - Actually (War Don) - Sending for....

Grime's sending culture is strong once again with the recent tiffs between Wiley and co. going in, and now it seems the newer wave of MC's all have stuff to say...in this instance, South Londoner Merky ACE has a few words to say for Voltage, DeeKay, Maxsta and Skilzie following on from Deekay's Hard Times war dub. Desperado - A.B.M - Review/Download

Unless you're a relatively new listener or someone who just floats within the borders of Grime, you should, by now, be aware of Desperado. Spitting since the early days of 2003, the former South Soldiers front-man has had 3 CD's out to date (Barz 4 Dayz, Gryhme Bangers & The Regiment (w/ South Soldiers), and features heavily with South London's new leading collective - Organised Grime. Respected highly for his features on TV outlets MTV Base and his wide range of features such as Roadside G's, Skepta, Fumin, Wiley and many more, the South Londoner is making impact. We've heard plans for single releases plus rumours of a CD with Skepta and Roachee, but for now we're to enjoy this fresh new free download.

Opening energetically with the ever-welcome Roll Girl Remix, the mood is switched right around on the deep and synth-full Journey featuring the increasingly lovely voice of Cadice. South London Press shows a strong sense of writing skill from Despa, and for those hoping for something quite road and greezy  Times Are Hard & Me On My Own do well. His efforts on Maniac's Ina The Ghetto beat are good and credit is due to Page, who featured on that one.

Overall, Desperado has come a long way since the days of Ska Riddim and Monster Riddim, his recent appearances alongside Jendor and co. on Rinse FM have done a lot to boost his profile, especially with sends for Ghetto.

Download the CD right now, despite being a collection of mainly released tracks, still worth the effort on all accounts.

House Of Grime Mixes 001: DJ Total

Here on my blog, I like to maintain the targets I set myself. So at the end of 2009, I said that I was going to release a new mix from a different DJ every month for absolutely no charge. Yeah, out the window that went. Instead I'm doing them as and when I can get mixes. So that will mean more than one a month. These, alongside my monthly "The Radio Grimes" downloads I hope will push the best of  fresh, new up and coming talent, plus showcase the best of what we have already !

 So I got on my Twitter, and had a word with top new talent, DJ Total. We spoke and right here, you can download an EXCLUSIVE brand new mix from the man himself. After you've read the brief Q & A I got with him.

So...DJ Total, for those who don't know who you are, introduce yourself...

I'm an 18 year old up and coming grime DJ from West London!

To what level of seriousness do you take your DJ'ing ? i.e is it just a bit fun or is this a career prospect for you ?

It's more of a hobby than anything right now, but one day I hope to be able to vacate it alongside whatever I'm doing in life as I really enjoy it.

Tell us about the tracks you chose for this mix, why do you like them and why did you use these in particular ?

The tracks I chose for the mix are just a brief insight into what I'm feeling at the moment, I just wanted to keep the mix energetic really! With the amount of good music sent to me selecting the tunes for this mix was pretty hard.

There is a big emphasis on DJ's at the moment, why and how did you get involved ?

My interest for DJ'ing came from going down to my youth club as a kid just messing about on the decks really, from there I nagged my Dad into buying me Technics for my 12th birthday, I collected vinyl here and there but I was never too serious about it. It's only the last year or so where I've took my DJ'ing outside my bedroom to be honest, and with the shortage of grime DJ's we have I saw it as a good opportunity to get into something I love.

What DJ technology do you use ?

Right now I own a pair of Pioneer CDJ-1000's along with a Hercules RMX DJ Console (MP3 decks) but of recent I've started to miss my Technics so when I got the money I will be re-purchasing!

And finally what can we expect form you in the near future ?

I've just got a grime slot on http://www.melodyone.com/ which I'll be starting at some point in February so I'll keep everyone posted.
